Most of us will associate a Vet visit with something going wrong (understandably!), but it doesn’t have to be that way. Creating a relationship with your vet while your puppy is still young is worthwhile. Allowing them to get accustomed to regular checkups, which will be essential throughout their life.
Puppy’s first vet visit
Welcoming a puppy into your family is an exciting time with all the snuggly cuddles, sweet belly rubs and puppy smell.
But between their vaccinations, puppy checkups and getting them desexed, it can feel like much of their puppy life is spent at the vet. While it may be overwhelming, this is the best time to start getting them used to their ongoing Vet visits!
Tips to keep in mind for your pups vet visit
- Choosing the right Veterinarian – A Good Vet that you and your pooch feel comfortable with will make all the difference in calming their little puppy nerves!
- Ensure you get your puppy used to being touched before their first visit. Yes, that means extra cuddles and pats at home beforehand
- Have lots of yummy treats stocked up for your visit – treats are a great way for your pupper to develop a positive association with the vet.
- Stay calm – It can be tricky not to worry about your four-legged friend, but they can sense if you’re nervous, and so they will be too.
Regular ongoing Vet Visits
Our pets can’t tell us when they’re feeling down, which is another reason a regular vet visit is so important. Annual Vet visits are essential in keeping your doggo up to date with their vaccinations. Still, they can also increase the chances that any problems starting to develop can be detected early.
During a typical vet visit, your vet will examine your dog’s teeth, ears, eyes, coat, and overall body condition. They may also take blood tests, urine tests, or X-rays to check for underlying health issues.
Your vet is also a great resource if you’re experiencing behavioural issues with your pup. They can guide you in issues like aggression, anxiety and destructive behaviour and recommend training techniques to manage them.
Prevention is key! Putting in the work when they’re a puppy means that regular vet visits will be a breeze.
