If you’re nervous about your furry friend’s airport visit, we don’t blame you! Whether it’s a short trip, your pet’s first flight or a big move, the logistics of getting your pooch from their paw-some bed to their next destination can be a challenge.
Here are the top things to keep in mind when planning their airport trip:
Take a visit to the Vet
The biggest worry on your mind will be how your pet goes during their flight, so before the flight, it’s important to make sure that your furry friend is fit to fly.
Some airlines will require your pet to have a Certificate of Clean Bill of Health before the flight, which you can get from your local vet. A vet checkup will guarantee that your pooch is happy and healthy, up to date with their vaccinations and ready to be transported!
Select the right crate
When booking your pet’s first flight, it’s important to select the right crate for their journey and ensure they have enough legroom!
If your pooch is a frequent flyer, you can choose to buy your own crate. Rest assured that if it’s their first flight, you can hire one too. Keep in mind that all pets must travel in containers approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Our top tip for travelling is to get your pooch comfortable with their crate before the flight. It’s the best way to make sure that they’ll be comfortable during the flight. Most importantly, it will give you your own peace of mind during the journey.
On-the day-checklist before the airport
- Take them for a walk before the airport to tire them out
- Pack your pooch a comfort toy for their trip
- Ensure you have all the documents and ID you need for their trip
- Make sure their crate has access to water and a waterproof mat
- Shower them with love and affection (not mandatory, but our favourite tip!)
- Allow plenty of time to get your pooch to the airport
