We were feeling the love here at Show Fur Around this month as we celebrated the launch of our Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula Dog transport service and Valentine’s Day, not just with our human partners and children but with our furry friends as well. After all, our pups have been there for us through thick and thin – so why not show them a little extra love on the most romantic day of the year?
However, we wondered if there was more to our unconditional love for dogs than just being cute and cuddly. Is there a scientific reason why our canine companions inspire so much devotion?
We know we love our dogs because they are adorable, greet us with excitement, dogs give wonderful cuddles and are incredibly loyal. But we wanted to find out if there was a scientific reason behind why we love our dogs SO MUCH… we did a bit of further investigation and found out why.
Science has proven that there is a biological reason that we humans love dogs so much. It all comes down to a hormone called Oxytocin, released by both people and dogs when they interact. Studies have shown that when humans pet their furry friends, the levels of Oxytocin in our bodies increase, leading to feelings of comfort and security. On top of this, Oxytocin can also increase feelings of trust, empathy and even attachment – no wonder we are always so eager for cuddles!
Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
It’s clear then that the love between our four-legged companions and us is rooted in something more profound than just cuteness (though admittedly, they score highly on that front, too!).
So, this Valentine’s Day takes the time to give your pup an extra cuddle – science says it will do you both some good! 🐶
