Best Dog Friendly Walks on the Surfcoast, Geelong and the Bellarine

We’re lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful beaches, stunning wetlands and excellent walking trails, making Geelong and its surrounds the perfect place to enjoy plenty of dog-friendly walks!

Stuck on where to go for your next doggy date? Check out some of our favourite dog–friendly walking destinations.

The Barwon River

The river is one of the most popular spots for walking your dogs for an excellent reason! The river offers many options for dog-friendly walks, and the ability to customise different length loop walks that suit you.

Also located along the river is the Belmont Dog Park. An enclosed space for your fur baby to play, socialise and reach their sniffing quota for the week!

Begola Wetlands

The Begola Wetlands is a beautiful nature reserve located in Ocean Grove, running all the way to Swan Bay. You and your poochy can indulge in the tranquil sounds of the wetlands. Coupled with the calls of the many different frogs and a range of bird species.

With various walking tracks and a viewing platform, you won’t be short of enjoying the stunning view and wildlife.

Fun fact: ‘Begola’ means many frogs in Wadawurrung traditional language.

The Beaches

Whether you’re hitting up Torquay or heading down to Barwon Heads, there’s no shortage of beautiful beaches.

  • Fisherman’s Beach down in Torquay is perfect for letting your doggy live out all of their off-lead beach dreams. The bonus is that it’s right next to Salty Dog Cafe. The perfect place for you and your pup to relax after your long walk.
  • Collendina Beach down in Ocean Grove gives you 6km of beautiful beach to enjoy the lapping sounds of the ocean and play fetch on.
  • 13th Beach in Barwon Heads is the ideal place for checking out the surf and spending tie with the dogs.

Dog Friendly Walks at the You Yangs

This regional park in Lara (just a short 30-minute drive from the CBD) is a walker’s dream destination. Full of Magnificent views, wildlife, bird watching, horse riding trails, mountain bike tracks and dog friendly walks!

The walk up to Flinders Peak (Wurdi Youang) is the perfect choice for taking in the views of Melbourne and Geelong from the top. For something a bit longer and more challenging to tire out the doggos, The East-West Walk takes you around the mountain with rock scrambling and bush scenery.

Bellarine Rail Trail

Looking for a trail that will run the dogs ragged? The Bellarine Rail Trail is a 35km track that links South Geelong to Queenscliff along the historical Geelong to Queenscliff Railway Line.

Keep your eyes posted for the vintage trains along the way!
